Very impressive

Ordered on Monday night and received on Thursday with FREE shipping from TigerDirect! The box showed a weight of 50 lbs which is pretty light for a 47" flat panel. The picture and colors are really excellent. I'm too cheap to spend $300 on a Blu player but Time Warner HD and standard DVD's look very nice. Can I say the image is better then an LG, Sharp, Samsung etc?? I think with any one of those brands, I'd probably be saying the same thing. Toshiba quality is hard to beat and I really wanted the USB/SD card slot for showing pictures. I've played MP3's from my thumbdrive and even viewed some AVI files. The JPEG picture display from my memory stick was excellent but their 'browser' seems to be a little buggy because now I'm having some trouble trying to get it to recognize the image files again.

PROS:
Not too heavy
USB/SD card slot (for JPEG, MP3, AVI etc)
4 HDMI
Swivel stand
Beautiful colors & picture

CONS:
may need a firmware update for the picture browser
this is not a 'narrow bezel' model

6-1-09: I'm a bit disappointed because the picture viewer from an SD card or USB flashdrive still does not work. I've contacted Toshiba and they say they are 'still working on it'. If you go into the store to buy one of these, take a thumbdrive (or SD card) and test this out first.
Toshiba Back in The Race

I purchased this TV from Amazon last week. Shipping was fast, less then a week (including the weekend). The TV was well packaged, but shame on Toshiba for not making it one of those boxes where you basically lift the top of the box off the TV and its just sitting on the bottom base of the box for easy removal.

The TV itself is amazing looking. I actually went to Best Buy and checked it out before ordering, and it was sitting in-between a bunch of Sony's and Samsung's and I actually thought the picture looked better then both of those brands. Though its hard to tell at these retail stores since they usually get paid to hook the expensive TV's up to a Blu-Ray player and the cheaper TV's up to the cheapest cable/source they can find.

So far I've used my Xbox 360, my Blu-Ray Player, my Wii and Digital Cable on this TV and everything so far looks awesome.

There is no lag at all while gaming. The TV has a mode for gaming, but honestly I couldn't tell it made any difference because the games looked great on all of the modes.

HD Cable looked great, watched some hockey, no ghosting or jittering at all. I've never owned a 120hz LCD let a long a 240hz, so I can't compare the two, but its definitely better then the old 60hz LCDs.

I only own 1 Blu-Ray movie (Beowulf) but watching it on this TV connected to my Sony Blu-Ray player it looked amazing. Regular DVD's upscaled on this player to 1080p also looked amazing.

Standard cable looked ok, Toshiba claims Resolution+ up scales regular TV to higher quality, but I'm not really convinced. Though I really haven't watched enough standard def to truly judge.

The TV is very light, I think it weights about 50 pounds with the stand. I love the swivel base and the connections all seem to be layed out nicely, I also like that it has both a USB and SD slot on the side. The deep lagoon border around the bezel is interesting it almost gives it a 3d look, I think it would look a lot cooler mounted on the wall, but mines just sitting on a stand.

My only real con about this TV is the size. Its a 47 inch but the bezel is large, bringing it almost to 52 inches when measured horizontally.

I've only had this TV for 3 days now, but I can honestly say it looks like Toshiba has finally gotten back in the game and launched a nicely priced and highly competitive TV to the market.

Excellect TV and value

I'm a little puzzled by some of the comments appearing in other reviews regarding the TV's size and bezel width. I don't know what other folks are measuring, but the Lagoon style framing is not particularly wide and the TV measured with a tape measure is 46" outside to outside horizontally, the diagonal is 47" viewing area.

As a TV plugged into an HDTV cable box, the unit came up and set up in a couple of minutes on component or HDMI connection. The image is very bright, clear and colors are vivid. The CrystalCoat high contrast screen coating does a great job of killing reflections even in a room that has a good deal of natural daylight sreaming in through lots of windows. On HDTV, the screen is completely filled with no odd bars, lines or other distractions.

I've added a Sony 589W DVD and sound system with wireless rear speakers. It was inexpensive, but the wireless rear speaker sound is clean, no problems with other networks and other devices in the house degrading sound. Where Sony likes to ignore equipment manufactured by other companies, the Toshiba easily connects to and controls the Sony receiver. When watching DVD's or TV the combination of the two perform admirably.

My TV was manufactured in March and had a firmware bug that triggers the quick set up dialog box every time the set is powered on. The work around is to disconnect the cable box, connect cale directly to the TV and let it auto program channels. After this, the TV will start without the quick set up prompt. I called Toshiba and they sent a firmware update on a USB drive that plugs into the TV and auto updates the firmware and also fixes the problem.

Consistent with other reviews, delivery took literally a few days by general freight, the package was in perfect condition as were the contents. We are very happy with the product and Amazon.

If there is one thing I would like to see added to the product, it would be an optional extended warranty. I know other companies offer these types of products, but there would be more peace of mind if offered by the manufacturer.
Excellent TV, Great Value

Having purchased a 32" Samsung 720p LCD TV previously, I was all set to purchase another larger 1080p 120Hz model for our newly-renovated basement. Decided to do some cost comparisons, and found this TV on Amazon at a great price. Had everything I needed and more and was several hundred dollars less then comparable Samsung and other higher-end models. I grew up with an old Toshiba picture tube TV, which lasted many years, so I was not concerned about quality. Amazon contracted sale out to Crutchfield, which has great customer service. The delivery guy (who I believe worked for a Crutchfield sub-contractor) was delayed by mechanical problems with his truck and ended up having to work overtime on a Friday evening in the pouring rain to deliver my TV. Another company might have had its driver reschedule the delivery, but when the driver arrived he said that he knew I was waiting and he didn't want to disappoint me. How great is that?

I've had the TV for about a month now and no complaints. Picture is great (especially with an HDMI cable purchased from Amazon for only $0.22 -- do not pay full price for these cables at a big box store!). CNET review said the black levels were "subpar", but go and look at the comparable TVs side by side in a store and tell me if you can really see a difference. Nintendo Wii also looks great, though not sure I notice any upgrade with the "Game" picture mode feature. Understand some of the complaints about the high-gloss screen and bezel design, but I think these features actually make the TV look great when you hang it on the wall, and for basement viewing there is almost no glare. A lot has been made about the 240Hz refresh rate effect of this TV. I was told by numerous people that since I like to watch a lot of sports I shouldn't go for anything less than 120Hz. I figured 240Hz would be twice as good. To be honest, I've done a comparison with my old Samsung (32" 720p 60Hz), and it's difficult for me to see a real difference when watching baseball, golf, basketball, etc., so that's something you'd want to consider when thinking about the price increase between 720-1080p and 60-120-240Hz TVs. The true difference I notice is in the brightness and crispness of the picture. And, although I don't watch a lot of standard def cable, there is noticeable difference with the new TV -- Toshiba really does a great job with this upscaling feature. One little annoyance was that there's some kind of bug that causes the setup menu came up every time you turn on the TV, but that's a very minor quibble, and Joe D's June 8, 2009, review tells you how to fix this problem (thanks Joe!).

Overall, this is a great TV at a great price. As another reviewer said, it's nice to see Toshiba back in the game.
Quick'n Dirty

Review Date: May 8, 2009
Reviewer: Bryan Thomas Witkowski,
I saw this TV at a local dealer. It was setup right next to Sony's XBR6 46" TV. By comparison the picture quality is very similar. If you disagree with this, you live in a fantasy dreamland where spending more money will magically make your TV watching experience better (at the expense of your new found inability to sleep at night). Sony is the crowned king of HDTV, specifically in their ability to upscale smaller signals (480i, standard definition). While I found the picture quality to be arguably the same as the Sony, the price was not. This TV costs about $400 less than a 46" XBR6.

So, I bought this and took the chance on a TV that has relatively little information on the net about it (i.e. reviews from CNET etc). I bought it primarily for internet video streaming and playing a standard signal (480i) - with the hopes of one day upgrading to full 1080p in the future. The related feature in this TV is Toshiba's "Resolution +". It looks way better than standard def that I've seen on other TVs. Period.

Another concern I had was the 240hz effect that is NOT true 240 frames per second. There is 120hz with a back-light flicker effect that is supposed to help eliminate motion blur. The salesman did not offer a demonstration of this feature before I purchased the TV. So, I created my own: Using a computer as input through a component cable, I set up a windows screen saver - scrolling text. You can toggle this 240 clearview on and off to see the difference. I am happy to report that there is in fact less motion blur with the feature enabled. If you pay $250-$300 extra for a feature you had better be getting your moneys worth. I think having at least 120hz is right for the price. I cannot say whether the additional 240 clearview that this tv performs is anything to really shout about.

Beyond that, the quick'n dirty is that the picture quality is top notch for this generation (especially with a standard def signal). There are a number of features which make this TV a good buy. I consider those to be icing on the cake really. In summary:

PROS:

Top notch picture quality for the 2008 generation of LCDs
Top notch upscaling of standard def signals.
Plenty of connectivity and many fun features like the USB and SD card.
- NOTE: this TV will play DIVX movies (yah you pirates know what i'm talking about) straight from the USB input.
Very easy to use setup and menu.
Price is much lower than the name-brand alternatives.

CONS:

Glossy Screen
Thick Bezel trim
Bezel has this kinda ugly white pattern on it - who ever decided to add this needs to quit their job... ya you know who you are.

One of the Best 2009 LCD HDTVs for the $$$, Better than a Samsung LN40B650

Review Date: May 5, 2009
Reviewer: Justin Haynes, Jacksonville, FL
My Toshiba 42ZV650U Review:
*Picture quality is excellent! No 'ghosting', 'flash lighting', or 'clouding'. My panel has no dead or stuck pixels. Color reproduction is excellent with vibrant (but realistic and not over-saturated) colors. Black levels are very good, blacks are not a light gray with this screen, the black is actually pretty close to actual black (there is some very minimal light bleed of course- it is a LCD). This is especially true with the lights on. Bioshock looks awesome! The 240hz effect really looks great too with basically no 'jitter'. Pans and zooms are smoothed with no added blurring. Resolution+ (aka SRT) also makes a huge difference for non-HD sources. My Gamecube looks much better on this TV then the older Sony 42" LCD it was connected to, much less artifacts and jagged edges that are smoothed down better. DVDs also look great, even older films. Watching Trinity and Beyond: the Atomic Bomb Movie (I highly recommend this wonderful documentary BTW) with it's digitally restored archival film footage of atomic bomb tests are absolutely spectacular looking.

*Sound quality is surprisingly good (considering you can't even see the speakers), and I enjoy using the Dolby Volume feature to quiet the transition from quiet show/ TV movie to a loud commercial (HELLO BILLY MAYS HERE!!!). The volume no longer decides to double itself when commercials are on! The speakers put out a fair amount of bass considering their size- they don't sound 'small' or 'from the bottom of a barrel'.

*The remote control is nice. I can control my Xbox 360 DVD player and Comcast cable box (Motorola) in addition to the TV after programming the remote. It is also not cheap feeling with solid buttons (I wish the buttons would light up though) and a sturdy build. The IR pass-through feature on the TV looks useful for people who keep DVD players and the like out of sight behind a cabinet, but I don't use it as my AV components are all visible.

*Media player looks functional but limited. I can see myself looking at digital photos on the TV from a SD card / USB Flash, but the functionality is too basic. Video playback looks interesting but I encode my videos in h.264 (for iPod/iPhone) - and that is not supported (as far as I can tell). Maybe Toshiba will offer software updates or the ability to add additional programs in the future? I will just use my Xbox 360 for these features, and in time I will build my own Mac media center computer.

---

I chose this LCD panel over the Samsung LN40B650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color panel (my next choice after the 42ZV650U) because it's overall picture quality (color, contract, brightness, black levels) is better, 240hz smoothing effect is great, Resolution+ up-conversion majorly helps with DVDs and other SD content, excellent audio quality/features (no more loud commercial transitions), and the design is more attractive (I don't like the Touch of Color Red personally). Oh yeah, and the 42ZV650U is about $400 less on Amazon compared to the LN40B650 (or $700+ less, excluding tax, than a local retailer as of early May 2009)! The Toshiba 42ZV650U is a real winner in my book!

I purchased this HDTV from Amazon May 1st, picked up at Pilot Air Freight on May 4th. It would have been delivered on the 6th within a 4 hour time frame but it was more convenient for me to pick it up myself. My biggest concern was shipping, as it is electronic and large - thus fragile. Shipping was super quick, free, and the TV appeared to be handled well in transit as the box was not beat-up. I am very happy with my Amazon purchase!

I bought this TV online after going to Best Buy and taking a look at it. I didn't want to buy a TV without seeing it in person first...and not having to pay sales tax was a big plus as far as getting it online ;) It was ordered 6/5/2009, and it was delivered in perfect shape on 6/12/2009 (way to go Amazon!).

I was blown away when I went to see it at Best Buy, and I'm still blown away by the fact that there's one downstairs in my living room. The contrast is amazing: I just finished watching The Empire Strikes Back, and I was shocked to see Vader's mask and cape actually being totally black!

I also bought a Blu-ray player the day this TV arrived, and I got The Dark Knight (one of the new Batman films) to see how it'd look. In short: it was amazing. The color was crisp and the response time being 8 ms made no discernible difference to me. I was thinking that might be a downer in scenes with a lot of quick motion (Dark Knight was a good tester for that), but it was not a problem. It was just as clear on the fast-motion fight scenes and the flyover city-view panning as it was on the slower scenes with just dialog. I was impressed. 120Hz is just beautiful (silky smooth)! I believe the TV also emulates 240Hz, but I didn't really notice that if it was enabled; I figure that not a whole lot of stuff out right now makes proper use of 120Hz, let alone 240Hz.

One reviewer knocked the aesthetics of the TV, and I have to respectfully disagree with his assessment. The pedestal stand with which it comes is perfectly sized, and the charcoal-gray bezel looks good. The lit "Toshiba" at the bottom-center of the bezel is a nice touch, and it can be disabled in the settings if it becomes bothersome. I like it as a good power-on indicator.

The menu system is well-thought-out. Amazingly, it actually made sense when I was casually playing around with it. I was able to customize the picture settings to my liking without getting into the manual...and when I did get into the manual (just to see what it was like), I was surprised to find that it was actually well-written and easy to understand. I was expecting something that had been machine-translated from Japanese, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that was not the case...or else the folks at Toshiba have made a darn good machine translator.

All in all, I think this was a very good buy. You get more screen size and better features for less $$ than other brands, so it's a no-brainer. I know I initially had qualms with not getting a well-known brand like Sony or Samsung, but I can say without reservation that such concern has no basis in reality.

For those who want a quick up-or-down on this TV: two thumbs waaaay up!
Great Value

I was a little hesitant about buying toshiba since I was always a samsung fan and the toshiba tv's never seemed to match up in picture quality. I am happy to say that this tv turned that thought process around for me. Thus far I have had no issues with the TV and the picture looks amazing. When comparing with other models this one outclassed the samsung b650 to me but the b750 did seem slightly better. Though when considering the b750 was $600 more than what I payed for this set and 2" smaller I can easily say this was the best bang for my buck tv by far.
Great value - awesome features for less than a grand

Reviewer: Cary M. Soriano,
I swore based on many online and magazine ratings to only purchase either a Sony or Samsung LCD TV (same manufacturing anyways). I never really considered the Toshiba Regza line until I saw it on display at an architectural exhibit. The colors and detail were absolutely stunning. Despite what CNET described as not that good, the darks were actually really visible and even more so because Toshiba added a more detailed color tweaking menu for the videophiles out there. The menu is VERY simple to understand - and my particular favorite navigation part is the ability to switch inputs so quickly using the left/right toggle buttons.

The sound quality is amazing. There are many built in options here as well. Dolby sound, surround, etc. The speakers are so well hidden and yet sound great.

Other features I love are all the HDMI inputs, an SD Card slot (we can watch slide shows from people's cameras), and the USB port (WOW you can watch DIVX movies, listen to MP3s etc from an external drive!!!)

I haven't really given the Clearscan 240 feature a chance yet because I'm waiting for the football games on sunday, but I'm very happy so far with the 120Hz smooth performance. Again, excellent value for all the features you get.
Love this TV

After studying LCD TVs for months, I decided to go with this model (from Beach Camera via Amazon) and could not be happier. I'm not a videophile so I can't speak to all its nuances, but I can say it has a beautiful picture, works great with my Tivo HD and Panasonic BD 60 Blu-Ray player. I was a little concerned about the glossy screen because it's in a windowed room with a slider but as soon as you turn it on I just don't notice any reflections. Delivery was quick (2 days) and setup was easy. In every way I'm thrilled with the set and Amazon.

Just Wow

Reviewer: Scott Baker,
I bought this for my brother for Christmas. We set it up on Christmas day, and just sat and marveled at the picture quality.
The only knock on this TV is the alternate ON/Off switch which is hidden on the bottom. I don't know why they installed this feature, but it caused us a little stress when we couldn't figure out why the TV wouldn't turn on.
Other than that (which is so minor), the TV is perfect. I'm jealous!
LG 47sl90 has beautiful picture

Reviewer: Jim, WI
I bought this TV about three weeks ago. I still have an analog cable connection, but I was surprised at how nicely the TV upscales it. The sound is pretty darn good for such a thin TV, but I do plan to hook it into a separate audio system.

My wife has a neurological disability and spends a lot of time with the TV. She really enjoys the new picture. One problem she has had is remembering which buttons to press on the increasingly complicated remotes that come with TVs and other electronics. LG included a very simple second remote that deals with only the basics. She is finding that a delight to use.

I also bought an LG BluRay player and connected it to the TV. With the TV off, I put a disc in the player and was surprised to see the TV turn itself on, ready to play the disc. That makes things even easier to use.

I can highly recommend this TV.

LG LED Flat Panel

Review Date: January 28, 2010
Reviewer: Tom E. Poturica, Rochester, MN
One of the main reasons to get this flat panel over others is the lack of glare. I looked at all brands and they all seemed to display the stores mercury vapor lights quite well except for the LG models. There is no glare from my windows or overhead lights at home.. it is very nice. The other beauty of this set is the clarity and display of colors that I didn't know existed. We popped in Nemo for the kids when we first got and stared in disbeleif at how beautiful the charecters were in bright tropical colors... It is also only about an inch thick and weighs only 40 pounds so easy for 1 person to move or even mount on the wall. I couldn't be happier with this model from LG.

This TV is fantastic looking, but for watching movies the TruMotion setting must be turned off. Otherwise, the movies move like cheap shot on video movies. Very strange. After that's shut off, everything looks outstanding.

Great TV - Amazing

Review Date: September 2, 2009
Reviewer: A. English, Blue Bell, PA USA
Unless you want an inch thin LCD TV, this should be your TV of choice. I went to Sixth Avenue where they had an exceptionally large selection of LCD and Plasma TVs. This TV had the best picture quality of any LCD TV they had. I was planning on getting a Samsung 1080P 120Hz thin LED TV (could not quite swallow the price of the 240Hz) model until I read reviews of streaks in the picture quality when watching the TV in a dark room. I then moved on to the less expensive non LED Samsung 240Hz LCD TV which is still $400 more than this Toshiba. Luckily, the salesperson asked me to take a look at this TV first. This TV is back-lit LED which makes the TV thicker, but provides better picture quality than the side-lit LEDs in the thin Samsung. The 240Hz was a real bonus--especially in a TV that sells for this price. I have had the TV for a month now and could not be happier with it. I have had friends that visit comment that this TV has the best picture quality they have ever seen in any TV. This is the best 46-inch LCD TV you can buy that sells for a price that's unbelievably low when compared to the competition. It might not be the thinnest LCD LED TV, but it does have the best quality picture in any LCD TV. It is just one awesome TV.
Superb LED LCD TV right out of the box!

Ordered this TV around the beginning of August. Amazon shipping said to expect it on the 14th. It arrived on the 12th, lucky I had just returned home because I was all set for the 14th! Anyway, The delivery guy carries it in, takes it out of the box and set it on the stand for my old Sony Bravia.(Since I didn't put the new stand together yet. He then helps me take the old TV down to its new location in the basement rec room. (Nice of him!) We plug in the new Toshiba and I connect it to my cable HD DVR box with the new HDMI cable I also purchased from Amazon. It works! Beautifully! The sound is better than expected. The picture, especially the HD channels is great and the colors and contrast are fantastic. Everything I expected and more. The Dolby sound leveling seems to work (still checking). Our collection of wide screen DVD's looks great. Maybe because of the Resolution+ upscaling. So check out all the features and compare the price with the only LED TV somewhat similar: Sony's BR8 series. I think you'll be very pleased with this new Toshiba 46SV670U (55SV670U is similar). By the way, mine was manufactured in JULY 2009!
I'll update this if problems develop.
Well, it's now October and this TV is still the best. And it's great to be able to plug in a SD picture card and watch a slideshow or plug in an USB flash drive and play music or other media.
I'll update this if problems develop.

June 22, 2010 --- Sorry I haven't updated before this but we've been so busy enjoying the OUTSTANDING picture quality, I guess I haven't had a chance. Yes, this TV is still amazingly brilliant in every way. Audio is good for normaal viewing but of course I switch on the sound system speakers for all the big sound DVD movies. No complaints. At all.
Very pleased with this TV.

I'm really impressed with the quality of the image of this television, especially given the price I paid. I had been looking at the Samsung LED panels, and although they were beautiful and vibrant, the increase in image quality didn't seem commensurate to the increase in price. So, I had given up on getting an LED-backlit panel, until I discovered this Toshiba. It was just released, and I was a little nervous about getting it sight-unseen, but I decided to take the plunge, and I'm glad I did.

The colors really pop out. The LED backlighting makes a *huge* difference for blacks. On my old 46-inch TV (a Sharp AQUOS), when watching dark movies, or standard-def stuff with black bars, the blacks would glow pretty noticeably in a dark room. Of course, this was par for the course for an LCD panel at that time, and it wasn't the worst thing ever.

With the proper configuration on this Toshiba panel, when viewing SD content in a dark room, the black bars fade into the darkness almost perfectly. Sometimes you can notice the selective backlighting. If there is a small bright object on a black background, it will have a slight aura from the section of backlight being on. If you connect a computer, set a black screen and move a white mouse pointer around, you can actually identify the backlighting elements. It's more cool, than annoying. I guess because of the way the human eye works, you really don't notice the panels/auras under normal viewing.

The media player functionality is pretty much worthless... it wouldn't play any of the movie files that I had on hand. Since I have an HTPC attached, it's not much of an issue. I basically bought the TV to function as a monitor.

Pros:
*Nice solid blacks due to the dynamic backlighting
*SD content from my Wii and DVDs displays beautifully.
*Plenty of connections
*Lots of complicated picture settings. I'm not a pro when it comes to calibration and viewing configuration, so my opinion is less valuable here.
*Pretty decent sound for stock TV speakers.
*Power-saving off mode to reduce parasitic power drain
*Pretty low power for the size under normal operation

Cons:
*The VGA input doesn't support HD resolution (!!) -- luckily, all of my computers have DVI/HDMI output
*Sleeping the display (when a computer is attached, eg) results in an annoying "No Video Signal" announcement bar to be displayed.
*Sleeping the display also turns off sound (this is a minor nitpick, and soon won't matter since I'll have an external sound system)
*Sometimes the image size options don't suffice for getting the picture to fill the screen properly. I really miss the setting on the AQUOS that widened things more as you approach the side. It usually resulted in a full-screen effect for SD content. The Toshiba options are to cut off part of the screen, or have black bars. Of course, due to the LED backlighting, the black bars are not noticeable which is nice.
Awesome and impressive TV

Awesome TV! Beautiful blacks and impressive colors. You can even geek out on extreme adjustments to the color if you wanted to. The only disappointment was the fact that it's not a true 240hz feature. Which technically they don't say it is, but to insinuate with the whole Clearscan 240. One would infer that it is 240hz. None-the-less.... The picture quality is still extremely beautiful. And just as stated previously, it is not flat like the Samsungs and Sonys, but there is a very good reason for that. It is LED Back-lit. The extremely thin ones are LED edge-lit. This TV comes with a feature called Dynalight in which the LEDs actually turn off to give you the blackest blacks capable of any TV. And when you see it, it is impressive. So who needs ultra-thin when your picture quality can't be beat.

Don't overlook this TV, it is an awesome set, and for the price it can't be beat. Oh and did I mention it is easy to use. The onscreen instructions are pretty self explanatory and it has a lot of options but it doesn't feel daunting. Great TV!
Had for 4 months and is great

I got this in November and it's now February. The picture looks great - I highly recommend the 240Hz with LED backlight version. It looks even better with blue ray. The picture has fuzz when it's not an HDMI connection, but that's the type of wire used for the connection. They used AIG for shipping and they showed up on time and helped me carry it upstairs to my apartment.

I would definitely buy from them again.

Incredible picture quality but with very clunky extra features.

Review Date: November 19, 2009
Reviewer: Terrance McCartney, Pittsburgh, PA USA
PICTURE

In terms of video quality, this TV is awesome. I can't imagine how the picture could be much better.

There are some minor picture quality issues with off-angle viewing (as the CNET review states), but I think CNET exaggerates the severity -- it's only noticeable to me if I'm far off center.

I haven't yet noticed any blooming effects.

Setting the "judder reduction" to 10 introduces some distortion at times, but a setting of 6 smoothes out motion well without noticeable distortion. However, this varies a bit with different source material. When viewing video files via DLNA that have a lower frame rate, the judder reduction setting can sometimes make things worse. But this is easy to turn off/on by source.

The color level seemed slightly off initially, even with CNET's recommended settings. For example, sometimes a blue sky would look slightly purple (i.e., too much red). But this was easily adjusted in the picture settings.

AUDIO

I don't use the TV's audio, since I have an external speaker setup. However, the TV's audio seemed a bit bland when I tried it.

Unfortunately, digital audio output from the TV does not pass through multi-channel audio from HDMI inputs. You need to run extra digital audio cables from your DVD player and other components to your AV receiver if you'd like Dolby Digital or DTS sound.

ENERGY

I measured the electricity usage at 110-115 watts (energy saving mode at "auto", volume off, picture adjusted per CNET recommendation). Setting energy saving mode to auto doesn't seem to hurt the picture quality at all.

This is very energy efficient -- it uses less power than my old 32" CRT TV. I'm amazed at how little heat I can feel coming from the back of the set.

REMOTE

If you have a universal learning remote, it will not be able to learn from the RF remote that comes with this TV (i.e., since standard remotes are IR rather than RF). However, I called Samsung and they sent me a compatible IR remote, free of charge. With that remote, I was able to program my universal learning remote. Ask for remote BN59-00851A.

BUILD QUALITY

One small build quality issue that I encountered: the plastic at the base of my TV extended a bit too far, making it impossible to fit it into the stand. I had to carve away some of the plastic in the slots of the stand just to get it to fit, which made me a bit uneasy. But other than that, the build quality is fine.

MEDIA FEATURES

Viewing video files via DLNA works well, for the file types that are supported. Although I've encountered many files that the TV doesn't play for one reason or another, the ones that it does play work well. I regularly stream 1080p video files from my PC, and the picture looks perfect (with wired Ethernet).

The TV has a variety of Internet and media features. But unfortunately there are lots of quality issues such as:

1. When playing video files through USB, DLNA, or Internet features, most TV controls are disabled. While you can adjust basic picture settings, you can't choose 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios. In playing NTSC video (i.e., any video that came from standard def TV, home movies, etc) from USB or DLNA, the aspect ratio is *always wrong*: 16:9 video is always squeezed too thin and 4:3 video is always stretched too fat.

2. There is no fast forward, rewind, or chapter advance when playing video clips or movies. This is true of playing YouTube videos as well. Although there is a "skip" feature where you can jump in increments (e.g., 10 seconds), this is only available for some video files (most don't support this, in my experience).

3. As the CNET review stated, the Yahoo widgets are extremely slow to start. Note that this has nothing to do with your Internet speed, since I have a 25 Mbit Internet service with wired Ethernet to the TV and it's still painfully slow. I have an HD TiVo with a lot of the same features as the Yahoo widgets, and that is far more enjoyable to use. But the one area where the Yahoo widgets outperformed TiVo was YouTube -- the Yahoo YouTube widget can play HD video clips as HD but TiVo plays them as SD.

4. If a media file played through DLNA (and I assume USB) has multiple audio channels, there is no way to choose which audio to play along with the video.

5. Does not support DTS audio.

I assume that these problems exist with all Samsung TVs with the Media 2.0 feature. Perhaps these problems will be fixed in a future software update. If so, I'll post an update (*** still no fixes to these issues as of 5/9/10 ***).
Awesome display

I have had this TV set up for 3 weeks now. Opinion:

Setup
Very simple, the packing box has removable plastic clips that allow you to slide the whole cover off. No annoying heavy staples. You can save the whole box with the reusable clips for moving the TV in the future. Took 2 people to safely lift the TV out of the styrofoam and lay it on the bed. About 15 screws later and the base is on. Pretty simple. The TV with base installed is about half the weight of my 32 inch Trinitron CRT.

Style
The black bevel with clear glass-like edging and brushed metal base is very attractive. When the TV is on there is a subtle blue glow on the bottom of the TV which is pleasant, but you can turn it off if you want. The base allows you to rotate the TV about 30 degrees each way which is a nice feature. The 1.6" thickness is a big wow factor.

Features
Extensive menu features for tweaking the picture. You can tweak the Auto Motion Plus (AMP) very precisely to your liking. You can change the colorspace settings extensively: you can modify each of the RGBCMY colors. For each input the TV remembers each of your calibrations. This is a nice feature. There is a "game mode" which minimizes input lag.

Picture quality
Totally depends on the source material. 1080i video from my comcast DVR looks amazing for certain programing. Vibrant colors, deep blacks. My favorite show to watch now is Glee because it really shows what the TV is capable of (my wife got me watching this...). I do not yet have a blue ray player, so I cannot comment on how this might look. I was impressed with the blue ray quality in the store.

One thing about movies on an LCD screen: all movies are filmed in 24 fps. First generation LCD screens that display at 60 fps always had difficulty with movies because they had to get 24 frames to fit onto a 60 Hz display. This results in judder, most noticeable during pans or smooth motion on the screen. This TV has the AMP capability to interpolate the extra frames to show smooth motion. But the problem is that if you crank the AMP settings all the way up you get a strange looking picture: movies start to look like amateur filmed video. You really have to see it to know what I'm talking about, but it is really annoying. There are 2 parts of the AMP setting: blur reduction and judder reduction. The JR is what gives the soap opera effect. So, for movies I leave the blur reduction all the way up, but put the JR at 0. There is still judder in the movie, but it is far less annoying than the soap opera effect. Oh - and regarding the AMP: it is a very useful feature you are watching a reality TV show or live action sports. I crank it all the way up and the picture looks awesome. For almost all other sources I use BR/JR of 10/0.

I am very pleased with how DVDs look upscaled. Pretty amazing that such a good picture can be made from a 480i source. Regular def video from the cable box looks pretty good. The TV has such high clarity that all the digital artifacts that come through the cable box are clearly visible. Playing the XBox on the 46B8500 is awesome. No noticeable input lag here. Very engaging experience.

Color
On this TV seem to be very accurate, although I am no spectrophotometer-wielding color expert. I like my white point a little bluer than most, so I started with the "Standard" setting and put the colorspace to "Native." I backed off on he green a smidge because the bowl game grass looked too green. Skin tones look very good, awesome on some sources. If you like warmer whites you can change your colorspace to warm1 or warm2. I briefly considered professional calibration, but I am satisfied with the colors as they are set now.

Regarding the blacks
They are so deep that when watching a letterboxed video or a 4:3 video with black sidebars, the bevel is the exact same level of black. Depending on how you have your settings, the LEDs on the black part of the screen are totally off. I cannot see how the blacks could possibly be any deeper.

The factory default settings for contrast are too high - 95/100 on standard. This results in occasionally noted blooming on the TV - really only noticed with one or two bright objects on a completely black background. Turning the contrast down to 80-85 minimized the blooming.

Viewing Angle
At first I thought cnet's description of the poor off angle viewing experience was overstated, but I somewhat concede the point. Once you get out of the sweet spot - about 5 people wide at 6 feet, the picture quality suffers. The picture gets washed out and blacks lighten up to the level of some of a traditional CCFL LCD or worse. Blooming becomes much more noticeable. While you still can technically view the image, the experience is not nearly as rich. This means you can't have like 12 guys over to watch the big game if you are gonna sit close to the TV.

There is a reflective screen. If you have windows behind you, you may notice them during dark scenes. I have no windows behind the couch, but do have a ton of light in the room. I see no reflections at all sitting in front of the TV during the day.

Sound
Abysmal. Immediately turned it off. If you are buying a TV this expensive, you will almost certainly have external speakers. The 18 year old $100 Sony floor speakers I have with an old receiver fit the bill. Don't buy this TV for the sound. The speakers face backwards and sound tinny and hollow, no bass. With a 1.6 inch thick TV you cant really expect too much.

Extra Features
Just as mentioned on previous posts, the yahoo widgets are really too slow to be useful. If you want to know the weather, watch youtube, or browse stocks, go to your computer. If you absolutely have to watch youtube on the big screen, it technically does the job - but very slowly.

Overall
I still feel like this is the best LCD that you can buy right now. With the right source, PQ is amazing. I researched for months and visited numerous stores to narrow down my choices. If your TV is going in a bright room, this TV is likely the one for you. If you are looking for a mancave TV for tons of darkroom movies, then a high end plasma might be better and cheaper.

Review: Samsung UN46B8500 46-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV

Review Date: November 23, 2009
Reviewer: M. Cardenas, Texas
~*~Updated - 01/20/10~*~
- Samsung has decided to discontinue the 8 Series (Website has completely wiped them out). Couple of reasons for this is due to the fact that since not many people knew about the 8 series (more importantly this 8500 set), they were losing money off of something no one was buying. Another reason, is because they are now putting the majority of their 'eggs in 1 basket'. That 'Basket' being the new 3D Technology. Which leads me to believe that the next line of Samsungs are NOT going to have as much focus & emphasis on picture quality such as this 8500 HDTV, but more focus & emphasis on the 3D Technology. One supporting fact: Samsung has yet to deny the possibility that NONE of the 2010 models will have Local Dimming - which is one of the reasons why this 8500 set is (and still is) the best LED/LCD on the market today. Instead all of the new 2010 models will go back to Edge-Lit LED backlighting, which is a step backwards.

- My advice? We all know this new 3D Technology is not going to be the best the 1st time around and within a year or 2 years that 'new' 3D HDTV will then become outdated. This 8500 set is the Best LCD/LED HDTV out there and through the trail and errors of the new 3D technology, this 8500 will still be an HDTV to reckon with. If you see it at a good price, buy it before there's no more.

For the past decade, there has always been one thing that Plasmas could do that LCD just couldn't even touch = Contrast Ratio & Black Levels. Up until now LCDs always had a hard time producing deep-dark black levels and the consumers are left with pixilated 'inky' 'blochy' black marks across the screen during a dark or night scene. But not anymore...

The Samsung UN46B8500 46-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV is the BEST LED-based LCD HDTV out on the Market today, period. And what makes this HDTV stand out from the rest?

The use of LED Local Dimming Backlight Technology - Before, the Samsung LED HDTV used 'Edge-Lit' technology where the backlights were located on the Edge of the Screen which is why some HDTVs had a distracting light effect on the edges of the HDTV (aka Halo Effect). And also had trouble producing deep black levels because the backlights were naturally too far from the source (located on the edges of the screen).

With the use of LED local dimming backlight technology, the backlight is actually throughout the screen (not just at the Edges) and can turn off independently from one another during black scenes; making it the best LED-based LCD to produce the deepest black levels ever. Yes, even compared to the Plasma powerhouse Kuro by Pioneer. Never before has an LED-based LCD HDTV even come close to a Kuro plasma HDTV.

Pros
- Local Dimming Backlight Technology = Deeper black levels than any HDTV available
- 120hz/240hz + Adjustable dejudder Feature (Not seen in a majority of 120hz/240hz HDTVs)
- Reduced "Blooming Effect" compared with other local dimming LED-based LCDs
- Internet Widgets (Including Yahoo, Youtube, Weather, etc.)
- Extremely energy efficient compared to any other HDTV
- The style is very Neutral and extremely thin = 1.6-inch deep panel
- Intense Adjustable Picture Controls

Cons
- Price is a little discouraging (But when you think about it, this HDTV is about 5 - 6yrs Future Proof)
- Poor off-angle viewing (This has always plagued both Plasmas and LCDs)

I've waiting for a long time to get another HDTV and I can honestly say the wait is now over. It maybe a little pricey but for what you're getting this HDTV offers a lot and has features that not many LED-Based LCDs have right now. To put it in short (& [...] agrees with me): This is the BEST LED-based LCD HDTV out on the Market (right now)

No question, Invest and Buy it!

THE REMOTE

Some have suggested that the RF remote makes using a universal remote impossible, not true. This TV comes with two remotes, the main remote is RF, the mini remote is IR. My IR STB cable remote instantly recognized and operated the TV since it was already programmed for my older model Samsung TV. As long as your universal remote accepts company codes to work you will be fine (it is only the universal remotes that require you pointing one remote at the other to program, that will require you to get your hands on a 7 series remote).

As for the TV, like the other reviews, the picture quality is stunning. The off angle viewing is not bad by any means, sure there is a sweet spot, but I assure you that unless you are replacing a top of the line TV with the purchase of this TV, the off angle image of your new UN46B8500 will most likely be better than any sweet spot DLP or older model HDTV image that you may be replacing. The only thing that makes the off viewing drop in contrast noticeable is that the TVs picture is so incredible that you tend to notice going from awesome to good. But this does not happen one seat cushion to the next, I only see it when I stand significantly to the side (but the TV stand has a swivel, so if you have a Super Bowl Party and people are strewn across your room, you can easily find the best angle to place the TV).

The sound is on par with my old Samsung DLP, the only problem is that the speakers are back facing, so I feel like I am blasting sound at my neighbors (I live in an apartment).

The one drawback for me is the reflective nature of the TV, however, I am sure I will get used to it (as I did with my laptop), and reflections are only noticeable when the scene you are watching is really dark, and the room is light. However, as many will contend, there is no way to block reflections only defuse them, so matte style TVs actually wash out the reflection and in turn the picture quality (+1 point reflective screen).

Bottom line this TV will not disappoint. But get the best price for it you can, trust me.

My UN46B8500 arrived on schedule on 12/3/2009 via Pilot and was set-up immediately. Great people, by the way. It replaced a Samsung LN-T4061F.

I purchased the Samsung Wireless LAN Adapter (WIS09ABGN) at the same time.

Location: It is located in a sunroom with 14 windows so there is a lot of light during the day. Since it did not have a matte screen like the LN-T4061F I was worried that the UN46 would have real problems with ambient light and reflections. Yes, there are significant reflections when the TV is off. When it is on, the reflections are pretty much unnoticeable, at least to me.

Calibration: I calibrated it using the CNET recommendations and then modified the following ones based on my preferences:

Mode: Standard
Sharpness: 46
Color: 45
Color Tone: Normal
Automotion Pro240Hz: Custom
Judder Reduction: 2

I am basically pleased with these settings.

Picture: Excellent. Much better than the LN-T4061F which I thought was very good. Blacks are really black and I see no issues with action scenes. I will say that some network shows (CSI & Criminal Minds, as examples) appear a bit dark overall. Football games, golf and other shows, like local news, appear to be correctly lit, however. I'd love some suggestions as to why the variation and what I might do to correct it!

Sound: Yes, it is lousy but I don't use it except when I am watching something using the Wireless LAN.

Samsung Wireless LAN Adapter (WIS09ABGN): The instructions are lousy, really lousy. But, it works. I installed the updated version of Samsung PC Share Manager on my laptop and then plugged in the adaptor. Using "Source" the TV found the LAN adaptor and my network automatically. I had to manually connect to my WEP encrypted "g" wireless network which involved typing in the key. No problems. It worked perfectly.

Internet@: So far I rate it pretty much useless but I haven't tried Netflex or any other download. Widgets are s- l- o- w.

Samsung PC Share Manager: Really poor instructions. I worked a long time before I figured out you had to share "Folders" and not individual files. After that it worked like a charm. I could view pictures, home-shot videos and downloaded TV shows. I have not done any music and have not figured out whether it is possible to transmit something playing on my computer screen to the TV without "playing the file" using PC Share Manager. So far, every file I have tried to play has worked flawlessly as long as it is in an approved format (i.e., jpg) and is in a folder. Pause will work but, so far, skip ahead/back has not. Apparently you can transfer files to the TV's memory but I haven't figured that out and there are no instructions that I have found.

Remote: After about 4 days my remote stopped working. Trouble shooting instructions in the manual didn't help but I did find the answer at the Samsung website but it wasn't easy. I use the remote only to operate the widgets, the LAN Adaptor and to change Menu and Tools settings.

Signal source: I have Dish Network HDDVR with an external antenna attached for added flexibility. The Dish remote worked the TV with no changes from the setting used to operate the LN-T4061F which was nice.

All-in-all, I love it!
