Awesome picture! Love this TV

Review Date: December 24, 2009
Reviewer: Bradley R Peek, Florida
I wanted LED for four reasons: light weight, low heat, low wattage, and great picture. The 40" Sharp Aquos LED exceeded my expectation for all four. There is absolutely NO heat emitted from the unit. It weighs only 30 pounds. The picture is the BEST I've ever seen in a TV -I'm not kidding here- the BEST. I waited about 6 months to post this feedback, thinking something might go wrong but no problems at all.

My folks bought a 50" Plasma at the same time and they've had a horrible time with heat coming from the TV; seems to heat the whole room (though that would be a nifty option on cold winter nights). Additionally their TV is extremely heavy and not easily moved. Their picture is nowhere near as good as mine.

I believe this TV is underpriced, and a very good deal. I ordered through Amazon, and the delivery & installation was extremely good.
Hard to Beat

This TV replaced a 32" VIZIO HDTV that I hung on the wall in the far corner of my bedroom last spring and subsequently discovered was too small for viewing at that distance (14'). This Sharp AQUOS is as advertised: sleek, glossy, and energy efficient (75 Watts!) with a beautiful picture.

My Ergotron pivot arm mounting system was sturdy enough to accommodate this under 30 lb. set with no problems. I was even able to install it by myself.

The set has no little lights glowing when it is off so it works well in the bedroom. Setup was very easy with my DirecTV HD receiver and with my off-air antenna cable distribution system for all the local stations. The favorite channel settings require some forethought before entering them, and I didn't find a way to skip/delete unwanted channels except by using the favorites system. The set and picture are highly configurable, but I just use the 'auto' setting for the picture. The blacks are incredible--to my eyes I don't know how they could be improved even though Sharp, wisely I think, avoided the fad of dynamic changes in LED backlight levels with their current LED offerings. This HDTV series is also relatively cheap compared to the competition.

I can't comment on the sound because I use a ZVOX original 315 that I have had for years. I will say however that the audio circuitry is audibly superior to that of the VIZIO 32" it replaced. It doesn't 'pop' when you power the TV down and the AQUOS' sound through the ZVOX seems to include the full audio spectrum of the broadcast program.
Beautiful, Affordable Big Screen-This is a steal!

Reviewer: Joshua M. Tucker,
I cant say enough about how great this tv is. The new ultra brilliant color display with LED backlighting is superb and ive never seen a more clear cut, sharp, clear tv before. The color is amazing, the blacks are so deep but the rest of the color so vibrant and clear. The sound quality is great too. I mainly got this tv to watch blue ray movies and play my playstation 3 in HDMI and the picture quality in unmatched. I previously had a 32' Vizio LCD and this tv blows it out of the water. I highly recommend this tv to any gamer or anyone who loves to watch very action packed, graphic movies. This was a steal!

Nice Simple HDTV television.
It is lighter in weight than my previous LCD 40in HDTV.
The Sharp LED HDTV has more external connections than my previous LCD HDTV.
The Sharp LED HDTV turns on and gives a picture quicker than my previous LCD HDTV.
This unit arrived fast considering it came from California.
I am very satisfied with this unit. I was able to get a very good price for this unit through Amazon.
Great TV for a Great Price

Review Date: April 18, 2010
Reviewer: D. Hollinrake,
For the price I paid for this TV, nothing can beat it. This was the best deal I could find for an LED TV back in February 2010. It is lightweight, uses next to nothing for power, and has 4 HDMI ports. Yes it also has an ethernet connection and I did hook it up just to see how it worked. It seems like more of a gimmick than anything really useful for me. Give me Netflix or full web browser then it becomes more useful.
I updated the firmware since I've had this TV as well and had no issues with the update. The latest firmware "improves performance on some digital and analog channels as well as improving performance of 1080i/720p signals input via HDMI" according to Sharp's website. I personally haven't noticed a difference so all I can say is it didn't screw anything up.
I have used the USB port to look at pictures. It works fine, nothing more to really say about that. Once you hit the power button the power LED light will come on letting you know that you have indeed hit the button. The blue chevron shaped light on the front can be disabled in the menus if you really don't like having it on.
The remote has a light button on it but it only illuminates the POWER SAVING, VOL, CH, MUTE, MENU, and FREEZE buttons. One irritating thing about the remote is that some of the buttons are hidden under a cover that flips over at the bottom of the remote.

A pricey HDTV that produces stunning images

Review Date: December 18, 2008
Reviewer: Pamela R. Heath, Bay Area, CA
People complain a lot about this TV's price. It's expensive. But if you're picky about what you watch and you have a lot of windows in your house, this HDTV LCD is definitely worth the extra bucks--especially since Amazon has free shipping and discount rates.

I was surprised how small the box was that this came it. It doesn't have a ton of protection around it. There is a thin film layer of plastic that protects the front bezel, which easily comes off. I did not use the stand, but put it on a swivel mount. Setup of the TV was very easy and the image outstanding, with beautiful colors and details right out of the box. By the way, a nice touch is that the TV's serial number is on the outside of the batteries for the remote control--which I wish I'd realized before searching the entire back of the TV with a flashlight (it was also on the back, but partly obscured by the swivel mount I'd used).

You see some folks who talk about "poor" off angle viewing and "blooming." I honestly haven't noticed either one. This thing looks great from a range of angles, the picture phenomenal.

The TV speakers are okay but not great. If you're going to watch a lot of movies--and trust me, with this screen you're going to want to--I'd recommend getting the Sony BDV-1000ES and an HDMI cable. That way you get theatre-quality sound to match the picture and the Bravia Link means the two will communicate well with each other, and respond to one remote control. Then, just pop in a blu-ray disk, kick back, and enjoy. This is one great TV.
Truly a window to the world.

Reviewer: Gerald V. Quinn,
I purchased this TV one month ago. It is a replacement for my XBR4 which is being enjoyed in its new home. Shopping and looking, then I saw it. It was love at first sight. And it is a sight to behold. Crystal clear, vibrant realistic colors, and a beautiful design. Sony has outdone itself with a new benchmark for the industry. You will not be disappointed with this beauty. This is TV as it has never been. Coupled with my FIOS HD service and a blu-ray player there's little reason to ever attend a movie theater. Although my Bose surround system is the perfect mate to this TV, the eight built-in speakers leave little to be desired. Check it out, you'll see TV like never before.
Expensive but one of the best

This set is one of the best 5 flat panel sets being produced. The others include the Pioneer Kuro PRO-111FD plasma and Samsung LN46A950 which also has LED back lighting. All are expensive so it's best to see all in person before you decide. The Kuro has been the gold standard for flat panels for some time, and rightly so, but the LCD sets with LED back lighting are now very close.

Some reviewers have niggled about off angel viewing and color blooming but that is picking the finest of nits. The off angle viewing is as good as all but a very few CCL backlit LCD or plasma sets so I'm not sure what that's all about. I have a pivoting wall mount so problem solved. As for the blooming, it is so minor as to not be visible unless you are right at the screen looking for it and is not noticeable in normal use.

The XBR8 will work better in a room with normal light levels than the Kuro and also renders standard definition programs better than the Kuro. It also beats the lone 1st generation LED set at rendering SD.

The LED back lighting generates less heat than an LCD set with cold cathode back lighting and much less heat than a plasma due to it's lower electrical current draw. Each individual LED cluster is controlled dynamically so that they are shut completely off during dark scenes producing the same absolute black levels as the best plasma sets. The LED back light elements have a service life of something like 20,000hrs so replacement is not necessary. They also will not fade over time like a plasma set does.

Whether this set is worth the money is a matter each person has to decide for themselves. Those that can afford one are very unlikely to ever become disappointed with the image. If you do buy one you owe it to yourself to get a full calibration done by an ISF certified tech in order to get all the potential out of this set.
Big bang for the buck!

Although the list price for this HDTV would be out of my budget, I purchased this amazing flat screen from Amazon for a little over $2,300. In my local electronics store, the Sony was my 2nd favorite (after the Kuro). The Samsung LEDs were close behind. What makes this unit ideal for me is the fact that is still has pretty decent built-in speakers. I personally hate having a sound system hooked up to my TV. I like to be able to turn on my TV and go. I made the salesman at my local store demonstrate the built-in sound to make sure it would be sufficient for my needs. (I was really planning on buying it there but they raised the price overnight and then I found Amazon's amazing price which saved me over $600!) Since we were originally thinking we were going to have to buy both a new TV (to replace our dying projection HDTV) and a home theater sound system (since none of the new flat screens seemed to have speakers at all anymore), we were able to apply that budget to this superior TV instead, which arguably has one of the best pictures available.

Now that it is installed at home, I am absolutely thrilled! I am more than happy with the built-in sound. I admit that those who are used to having booming surround sound audio would probably be disappointed, but the sound set at medium levels is very nice for day to day viewing. If you turn it up for serious BluRay DVD viewing, it is pretty impressive as well. The picture is truly stunning!

I must give kudos to Amazon for their customer service as well. The first unit we were shipped turned out to have a cracked interior screen. The box was undamaged and everything seemed fine until we powered it up. There were massive cracks going across the screen (actually a picture of cracks since the exterior was fine, just the interior screen of some kind was broken - it was obvious it had been dropped at some point.) I called Amazon immediately and they took care of it quickly and courteously and now we have our beautiful new TV. Yes, I would have rather had a perfect unit the first time out, but the money we saved over purchasing from our local superstore was more than worth it.
XBR8 - why not?

Review Date: April 29, 2009
Reviewer: D. Pates,
I just acquired one of these 46" XBR8 units. As others have said, the image quality is nothing short of awesome. I threw on my DVE calibration disc, and very little tweaking was required to get it just spot on. I do recommend enabling "Full Pixel" mode, and turning off the MotionFlow stuff - I find the frame creation to make the motion unnatural and kind of creepy (and on some material, it can add artifacting). If you are an HT junkie though, this is one *sweet* TV. Go check it out.

Trend setter? LC32LE700UN LED Full-array TV

Review Date: August 15, 2009
Reviewer: G. Perry,
I've been on Amazon for years and seldom write reviews.

However, I spent about 30 minutes watching and generally checking this set out at a local dealer, about a week ago.

The image you see here is misleading. Misleading in that the set itself is surprising more beautiful than this image shows. And there is a blue light V-shaped symbol in the center of the bottom horizontal frame. That might strike some as tacky but in fact, it's a rather nice understated touch. Another surprise is just how light it is. You can easily pick it up and move it with no strain. Try that win an old Trinitron CRT set.

The picture stunned. I was completely surprised by how great it is. It has deep rich color, uniform brightness and as critical as I am (Only the Sony XBR8 RGB LED Sony has impressed me, until now) I have to say for the price, it tells me that full-array (LEDs completely cover the back, instead of just being around the edges) can be done well and at a price that will sell.

Assuming the set proves reliable, with no negative surprises, it's going to cause Sony and Samsung a real price headache. The 32" Samsung edge-lighted (Not Full-Array either) is around twice the price of this set and I see no difference in picture quality.

Check it out.

This is a wonderful TV. The picture is outstanding and the Home Theater Store in Houston not only came up with an outstanding price but excellent service. Try to buy from this store. They are the best.

Yes, the tuner is a little slow but 99% of us are going to use this set with HDMI sources like a HD cable or Satellite box - right? No flaws in the display but you have to open the little door on the remote and find the A/V mode that suits your environment. This set has a huge number of "knobs to turn" as far as setting up the picture so be careful and find the mode and settings that you need. Once you get it set - it will blow you away.

Yes, the sound isn't what you got out of the 250# "console" TV that you just replaced. It has small speakers because it's a flat panel TV. They are all that way. So stop complaining and go buy yourself a little 5.1 channel sound system that has an optical input. Hook it to the optical output of this set and the Cable or Sat box (see below) and it will be the best show you have ever heard or seen. Better yet, go buy yourself one that has a DVD upconvert or Blue Ray DVD player in it. The LG LHT854 on Amazon is a good example (for less than $200). Buy your optical and HDMI cables here on Amazon too and save a lot of $$. All the hype you read about certain cables being better is wrong. They don't need to be gold or start with "M". Speaker cables don't need to be big, fat and hard to work with. Unless you are running 2000 watts or more, 18 or 16 gauge wire is just fine. It's all digital data so there is no way the optical or HDMA cable can effect the quality of the sound or video. Be sure to connect your optical sound cable from your cable or Sat box directly to your sound system so you don't pick up a delay from the TV processing it. IF your sound system has only one optical input, buy an optical splitter/combiner on Amazon for a couple of dollars and combine the optical sources from the TV and cable or Sat box. This all works.

Sharp has taken the most appropriate road on LED backlighting in my view, simply replace the florescent system with proven technology that was developed for the laptop industry by leaders like Apple. It's very bright and even.

Since writing the above review, I have become even more sold on this product. Sharp has a fairly small market share in this field so they try hard to support their users. They offer a program called Aquos Advantage. It includes 3 mo.of warranty extension and a newsletter with info on using their products. It also includes a REAL help line you can call to get help if you don't understand something or can't make a feature work. If you are new to HDTV this may be of value to you. They also have a Facebook page and are very responsive through that site. The bigger manufactures may have these contacts as well but Sharps people seem to care about each customer.

The other thing I have noticed is the quality of the graphics engine. I connected my 3 year old standard def (480P) DVD player to the set using the "component" connection and the picture is as good or better than from an HDMI-connected Up-convert player. This indicates that the graphics engine in this set is outstanding.

When you get yours, open the little door on the bottom of the remote control and check out the different preset video modes. You will find them very helpful as you try different sources or types of material.
a winner

got this about a week ago. the picture is amazing. very black blacks, extremely sharp color. paired with a sharp aquos blu-ray player, the aquos link system works very nicely. more than enough connections. menu/settings are pretty easy to access/understand. LED technology seems the way to go given the energy savings and life of the backlight, and sharp seems to have a winner here. interesting to me - if you upgrade to this from an old lcd hdtv, you'll notice a huge difference in the heat coming from the tv.

the only downside are the speakers - they are clear enough but tiny and hollow. but this holds for every lcd tv on the market as far as i am concerned, so i can't really hold this against sharp.

like the previous reviewer said, as long as it proves reliable sharp has produced a tv that gives the best sony, samsung, and other sets a run for their money - at a much lower price.
Don't hesitate, get this TV! -- with caveats, of course

I've lived with this TV for a about two months. We have three game consoles attached, incl. the Blu-Ray player as part of the Sony PS3. It is in our family room and is used several hours a day (I'm ashamed to admit).

On the plus side:

Fabulous picture, after some adjusting. There are a zillion adjustments on the TV, so if you spend some time, you can get a wonderful, uniform picture with great contrast and color saturation.

The black matte finish of the screen does away with all but the most severe (i.e., bright) light sources that might reflect from the screen.

Price.

Sharp Aquos brand.

No spotlighting or banding as one person mentioned -- very uniform lighting.

LOTS of inputs. (8 to be exact -- most, but not all are HDMI)

Easy to update firmware when available (did it yesterday).

On the negative side:

The built-in speakers. Way too soft, even on the loudest setting. Since we didn't want to have our stereo system on all the time, I attached an unused set of desktop computer speakers I had lying around the house. Now we have better sound than probably any built in TV speakers. Great solution that I recommend to anyone purchasing this TV. Of course, this is an issue with all flat screen TV's to some extent: tinny sound and lacking in volume, even for everyday use. (Get some computer speakers, preferably like those I have that do not have an on/off switch but switch themselves on/off when there is a signal. Piece of cake.)

All the adjustments you can make to the picture! Well, not a negative, but it takes awhile to find your way around all the adjustments, and Sharp is not good about explaining them. The out-of-the-box setup was not optimal: reds were a little pinkish, the picture was not quite bright enough, etc., but after some tweaking I have a spectacular picture.

When changing channels, there is a "fade effect" between channels that is annoying. I have not been able to figure out how not to get this effect. (There is a "fade effect" in the menu, but disabling it has no effect.)

Summary:

If you haven't seen a full array LED LCD TV, you're in for a treat. Don't let the premium priced Samsung LED LCD's tempt you either, because their LED's are all on the edges. This has a full array behind the screen so that the picture is much brighter (when adjusted) and more uniform. Buy this and get some computer speakers. You will not regret it.
No flashlighting, No banding. GREAT VALUE.

It's been about a month now owning this TV and I am generally very happy with my purchase. In almost all aspects its just a wonderful TV and I think it's certainly a no brainer in the current LED market. Here's what I've found out about my new Sharp TV:

Pros:
It's got the blacks you want. Plain and simple. Definitely impressive stuff compared to my other two LCD's in the house.

Nothing dead, nothing stuck, no flashlighting, and no banding. Another reviewer mentioned these problems but from what I have experienced and what I have heard from others this is a near non existent problem.

Deep customization for adjusting hue, saturation, tint etc etc allowing for really fine tuning. Personally this has been more of a con but its only because I'm too cheap to pay for calibration.

Great, vibrant colors in general with a picture that has "Pop".

Cons:
The included remote really isn't that great. I don't enjoy the buttons themselves nor the layout. Of the Phillips, Sanyo, and Toshiba's I have used recently I would say this isn't the worst but not as nearly as good as the Toshiba's. Whatever, not much of a con but it's true. You can always use a universal.

As good as the colors are...your gonna need some calibrating to get this one right. I am still trying to get what I want out of this guy but I'm positive it'll work out in the long run. Mainly it's an issue with flesh tones.

The speakers are honestly pretty poor. Even compared to my Phillips and Sanyo LCD's these speakers just have a bit of a tinny sound. Not a huge deal but this is where I have knock half a star off on my overall review.

No matter what, this is a winning product. Highly recommended...especially in the 32" market. GREAT VALUE. ~4.5 STARS / 5

Sharp's Ultra Brilliant LED system illuminates the TV to extremely high brightness and contrast levels and enables significant environmental benefits such as longer life expectancy, no heavy metals and lower power consumption. At the same time, the new XGen LCD Panel utilizes an ingeniously devised pixel design that permits more light to pass through even while minimizing light leakage, with the result being the deepest black levels that AQUOS has ever achieved. Overall, the LC46LE700UN shows that with Sharp, it's not just LED… it's AQUOS LED.

Currently this is one of the cheapest LED LCD tvs on the market.

Why is it so cheap? Sharp skipped out on a few features that that add a lot to the price without adding a lot to the quality.

1) No sub-dimming.
Many LED tvs support dimming some of the LEDs to get blacker blacks. While this sounds great in theory, the problem is currently the resolution of the LED array is much lower than of the LCD array. This means that the dimming can't perfectly match the image so you'll sometimes see edges glowing. I'm happier without this feature as the lighting is consistent.

2) Not 240hz.
The input is 60hz (at best) which can then be extrapolated into 120hz (which this tv does). Going up to 240hz makes it more likely that the interpolations will guess wrong and offers little benefit in terms of noticeable difference.

3) Not super thin.
Some LED tvs are ridiculously thin. While uber-thin tvs look nice hanging on a wall, it adds a lot to the price tag. It also means less space for inputs. This TV has a great form-factor and looks amazing. I doubt you'll ever notice how thin your TV is after buying it.

On the other hand, Sharp didn't skimp on the LED panel, using full-array backlighting. This gives more consistent brightness than perimeter LEDs.
My one small complaint is that it takes a bit longer to switch inputs and turn on than I'd like.

Overall, I highly recommend this tv. The picture quality is superb. When I went to a retail store to compare it to non-LED tvs I could see a world of difference. The contrast is amazing with deep blacks and the colour is very vivid. It even works great as a 1920x1080 monitor for my mac mini using a DVI to HDMI adapter.

* Update: I'm not sure how I never realized it before, but it actually takes about 10 seconds to turn on the TV from fully off. I don't mind too much, but if you will this is not the TV for you.
AMAZING !!!!!......

.... is the best word to describe this TV. After months of research, questions, comparing, and price shopping, I truly feel like I got the best bang for my buck with this TV. The picture is amazingly crisp and bright, the colors pop off the screen, and the blacks are very good for an LCD-LED. One of the main questions I had was the 120Hz vs. the 240Hz, and if that really made a big difference. After talking with countless reps and reading/watching reviews online it was pretty clear that even these "experts" were having a hard time noticing any major difference. If they did see a difference, it was minimal at best. To each their own though. Each of our brains process images differently, so some people might notice a difference. I could not see any major difference, so it was not worth paying the $400 more for the 240Hz.

For me, it came down to this TV vs. the Samsung UN46B7000. Here is why I decided to go with the Sharp......

* Comparing them side by side the picture/colors were better on the Sharp. Period.
* With the full backlit LEDs vs. the edge lighting on the Samsung, the Sharp's screen was brighter.
* Sure the Samsung is much slimmer coming in at just under an inch and a half, but you don't buy a TV to look at it from the side. I have mine mounted on the wall, and it only sticks out 4 inches. Really what you have to decide is what you prefer.... asthetics of the TV vs. picture quality.
* Read every review on the Samsung and the most common complaint about them is the sound. Because it's so thin, the speakers are crap, and the sound is horrible. If you are seriously looking at a Samsung, go into the store and have the rep turn off the surround sound and turn up the TV's speakers. You'll understand what I'm talking about.
* And the #1 reason??........it's cheaper. After all, it's all about the Benjamins.

I would highly recommend this TV to anyone who is looking to make the jump to an LCD-LED. Not only do you get amazing picture quality, but it's cheaper than most LCD-LED sets out there. 5 stars.
This the one to buy!

I am a professional analyst and before buying anything major I research it to the nth degree. When I started looking for a 46-inch hdtv for my new sunroom. I assumed I would end up with a Samsung or Sony or maybe a Toshiba. After reading about their shortcomings (the Samsungs have a problem with corner-flashing with the edge-lighting and the Sony, especially the V-series, had a host of issues including reliability and poor color balancing--too red), I started looking at their competitors. When I saw the Sharp in a row of other sets, it immediately caught my attention. The picture just seemed to "pop" out of the set. It just seemed so much more realistic and vivid and "lifelike." The more I looked into it, I understood why. It is an LED set, like the Sony and Samsung, but uses a different lighting approach that does not introduce the errors that are common to the others. The Sharp also had something that none of the others have...the Quattron technology. It is the only one that adds another color (yellow) to the standard red-blue-green mix. It may not sound like much, but it makes all the difference in the world. This set makes me smile every time I watch it. The room in which I placed it has a fair amount of ambient light, but the Sharp does fine there day or night. It may not be as thin as the Sammie but that is more of a gimmick than anything. I have my set mounted on a swing arm and actually prefer the more solid feel of the Sharp. As has been pointed out earlier, the 120hz is all you need for motion control. Any more than that introduces (on other sets) artifacts that are distracting. The sound is not the best (although it is as good as most)...how much performance do you expect from tiny speakers? I run my audio through an Onkyo A/V receiver and it rocks. Sharp did a fabulous job in putting a stunning LED hdtv out there for a price much less than its competition. This is the BEST 46-inch hdtv for the money, without a doubt! If you are on the bubble and can't decide, let me help. Save some money and buy the Sharp, you will be glad you did.
Sharp hits the mark with their flagship LED-LCD.

Reviewer: da dude,
The LE700 series of televisions marks, in a sense, a new beginning for Sharp. While once highly regarded, in recent years, quality issues with their sets (manifested in an annoying banding problem) and generally lackluster picture quality have caused the panel manufacturer to fall out of favor with home theater enthusiasts. This set remedies all of Sharp's previous shortcomings. The quality of this set, combined with its comparatively low price, represents an extraordinary value. I'm surprised that this set isn't more popular than it is, to be quite honest.

The picture quality on this TV rivals that of most plasma TVs while offering retina-searing brightness (whether you want tone it down or not is up to you). Now, for those not aware, there are two types of LED-based TVs on the market, and many companies aren't quite forthcoming in their literature about which system their televisions employ: 1) Edge-Lit LEDs, which employ LED bulbs only about the edge of the screen; there's no actual light behind the screen. These are usually marked aesthetically by being ultra-thin. They offer increased picture performance over a standard flourescent-backlit LCD but tend to have irregular uniformity and are usually brighter towards the edges. 2) Full-backlight LED. These sets are completely backlit in the manner of traditional LCDs, but replace the flourescent lamp with a full array of LED bulbs. They offer increased picture performance and much better uniformity than edge-lit models. This Sharp employs the latter method of LED lighting, and the picture trounces that of much more expensive edge-lit models offered by Samsung. The screen is completely uniform and I can't detect any un-evenness at all. Black level rivals that of a good plasma. Out of the box, the picture quality amazingly vivid and extremely unnatural. Luckily, this TV offers probably the most extensive array of available picture adjustments I've ever seen, including a six-color value, hue, and saturation adjustment. Needless to say, the possibilites with set are vast and can even be a bit overhwelming (I still find myself tinkering with them at times). Out of the box, this set also has a feature called "active contrast" engaged - I would suggest turning it off. It does make blacks deeper and color more vibrant, but blacks also tend to "crush" in this mode - in other words, thay are so black that they obscure a lot of detail within shadows. With this feature on, you may also notice an annoying fluctuation/flickering of darker areas of the picture. This set requires some fine tuning, but after that it's a real gem. Picture tends to wash out a bit at extreme angles, but that's just a symptom of being an LCD, so I won't remove any points for it.

This set tends to be priced lower than other backlit offerings from Samsung, LG, and Toshiba for a couple of reasons touched upon in a previous review:

1: The TV features a 120Hz refresh rate, rather than 240Hz available on most other LED-backlit sets. Sharp claims at the time of development of this product, they couldn't implement 240Hz without introducing significant artifacting. The 120Hz/240Hz debate is really at its core very silly - 120Hz is really all you need to remedy motion blur. Most people cannot discern the difference between 120 and 240 Hz anyway. It should also be noted that LG and Toshiba sets don't actually implement a true 240Hz refresh rate, but rather a 120Hz refresh rate combined with a rapidly flashing backlight. The 120Hz mode used here is extrememly efficient and separates anti-blur and de-judder modes, which is especially useful when wanting to watch films in original cadence.

2: The TV lacks a local dimming feature found on other backlit LEDs. On local-dimming enabled sets, the tv can dim the LED diodes in individual zones behind the screen to achieve greater contrast and deeper blacks. The problem is, the blacks tend to get so deep that they crush and obscure shadow detail, and the number of specified LED zones is never high enough to accurately dim without leaving a nasty white "halo" around a dark image.

So, in essence, this set shows Sharp actually conservatively stepping away from bleeding-edge technology and going for what works. And let me tell you, it works very well.

The speakers on this set are sorely lacking - they are weak and tinny. But most flat-panel televisions suffer from this same problem, and most owners of such TVs opt for external sound. No big deal. Design-wise, the set is a masterpiece in understatedness. A rectangular glossy black frame, free from flourishes besides a tasteful silver fade and triangular blue light along the bottom (which can be switched off though the menu). When turned off, the monolithic marvel blends in extremely well with any room and exudes a sophisticated elegance.

The set offers a myriad of connection options, including four HDMI. The LE700 also touts Sharp's Aquos Net feature through an ethernet connection. Aquos Net offers web content directly to your TV; I've never used this feature, so I can't quite comment on how it works, but it's there if you want to use it. The remote included with the set is oblong and hides extra buttons beneath a tiny door to keep extra clutter off the face of the remote, and some of the buttons do light up.

All in all, the LE700UN offers excellent value and abundant features compared to the competition. If this series is indicative of the quality of forthcoming Sharp TVs, then I'd definitely position them back at the top of the LCD game. Highly recommended.
Excellent LCD, best for the $

I've waited a month so here it goes:

Overall,
Great tv. The quality of the image is outstanding. While I do note some cons, for me they are non issues. Comparing it to other lcds that I own, and many of my friends lcds, I am continually impressed with the quality of the picture. The only thing I have seen that has been as good and or better was a Sony XBR LED that cost three times the Sharp. Image quality is definetely better and more consistant than other edge lit led lcds, noticed this instantly on a friends 4000$ Samsung led lcd.

Pros,
Top notch picture. Full LED array. Great auto source recognition, no nead to ever maunally change picture modes. Easy picture tuning(not really nescessary). Easy firmware updates.

Cons,(although not for me)
Large highly reflective bezels. Fixed stand, no swivel. Built in speakers are useless. Thick, plain, not very stylish. Glossy screen does reflect lights in dark rooms. Aquos Net is limited and fairley useless.

Consumer Reports has not rated this set yet. Their current top rated set is the samsung ln650, which although good, has minor flaws, such as "3-ball effect" (tennis and football), varying shade of green on football fields when comparing line of scrimmage versus either side, and some smudginess.

I see none of that with UN46B8000 that I bought last week. Fast motion is excellent. White is white, black is black, and reds and blues are beautiful. Clarity is excellent. Once in a while I've seen intense yellows and greens where I've wondered if it was an accurate depiction, but I've not made any adjustments yet. But, it's hard to get all these qualities, especially whites, in plasma. I'm not a professional, just my observations based on a few months of shopping.

My opinion is that plasma has lost it's advantage, especially if you consider power consumption. Plasmas only advantage now is price, but that should change over time.

The only problem with the un46b800 I've had is that occasionally the backlight setting jumps up. I think c/net mentioned this. Still, I'm very satisfied with this set.
Great LED-LCD TV, fair to high pricing

I love the set. it's extremely thin, and I the color is brilliant. I haven't noticed much flashlighting, triple ball effect, or other problems which effect most standard LCD sets. If you're relying on factory settings for picture quality, you should seriously go to [...]
Do not use the slim wall mount if you have one. It's magnetic and causes some problems w/ the set.

I was able to take advantage get a steal of a price on a sale, and had to jump on it. If you have money to burn, it's a great set. there are some 9 series standard LCD sets from Samsung which are great.

Be aware that there are no true LED sets out there. This is an edge lit set. That means that there are some LED's along the edges of the screen providing backlight to the lcd screen. The next series, 9000, will feature local dimming LED which are spread in zones throughout the set. Not a true LED, but closer, however .. more than likely.. you'll pay the price.

If you're in the market for an edge lit LED-LCD set, and you're happy w/ 46in, jump in. If not, wait it out a bit until there's new tech you want badly, or until the prices drop.
AMAZING

Reviewer: zagm,
I never write product reviews. Never. This is my first one in 13 years of using the Internet.

To put it simply, this TV is amazing. Absolutely unbelievably amazing. If you think it looks good in a show room, it really is even better once you take it home. The difference between this TV and others is that it is like watching HDTV for the first time all over again.

I unboxed the set and The Dark Knight happened to be on HBO in HD so I turned it on with high expections and it even blew those out of the water.

I could go on and on and on here but there really is not much more else you can say. Everything about this TV is perfect and it is definitely money well spent.

Stunning in Every Way

Much has been said here about picture clarity, features, design, etc... Let me pass on a few different comments which may benefit those contemplating this purchase, or who have already made the purchase.

To those of you who are skeptical about buying electronics online, relax. Although it is risky buying from those Manhattan online electronics resellers, every step of ordering my Samsung UN46B8000 from Amazon was perfect. Lets start with pricing. After a little web surfing, I found a site that mentioned a significant discount would appear, once the TV is placed in the shopping cart at Amazon.com. I tried it and it worked. For kicks, I printed the page and took it to Best Buy. They admitted they could not come close to matching Amazon's price. Went home and ordered it from Amazon, saving hundreds of dollars. Emails from Amazon soon followed with updates on my order. A couple days later, a phone call to schedule delivery. Two guys delivered the TV and lifted the box cover to verify no visible damage in transit. After a brief conversation, they explained they do a lot of deliveries for Amazon. BTW, I also ordered the Slim-Mount Wall Mounting Kit from Amazon. Best Buy = $250, Amazon $125.

A bit about wall-mounting the TV. Two grooved, hockey puck size disks mount to the wall, spaced about 7 inches apart. Another pair of disks connected together with a cable, mount to the back of the TV. You then hang the TV over the wall disks. Like everyone else, all I could envision was my TV crashing to the ground, but it works....scary, but it works. Note, if you need help aligning vertical placement, drill your wall holes 7 inches apart and 22 inches above where you want the bottom of the TV to be. Note to Samsung: Put this in the manual. The instructions that come with the mounting kit are worthless.

And now, the TV. More features than I have time for. I noticed a new firmware update had been released, so I downloaded it from Samsung. It's a single executable, which you run to unzip as a folder containing several files. Open the folder and drag the files to the root of your USB flash stick. Plug the stick in the back of the TV and perform the software upgrade. The TV wont find the files if they're still compressed or not at root level. Samsung: Put this on your website. For users connecting their TV to the Internet via the TV's RJ-45 or optional USB Wifi Stick, the process may be simpler.

Other process' like deleting unwanted channels are not accurately explained in the manual, but after a few minutes of screwing around, you learn how to select the channel lineup, pick a channel then press Tools to get a pop-up menu and choose Delete. Connecting my laptop to the TV via a 15 pin VGA cable yielded a sweet, finely detailed image. If you're not planning to display movies/pics from websites via an Internet connection, you can still display content from your PC, if your PC has video out. The TV also has a 2.5mm audio in jack, so you can run audio from your PC as well. One other cool feature is by holding down the Volume Down button on the TV for 10 seconds, the Remote Control beeps making it simple to find a lost remote.

All in all, a very nice TV with some cool features. This is our first flat-panel TV, so nothing really to compare to. BTW, to the guy who commented on two hot spots on the bottom black bar during movies, I'm getting none of that. Just a perfect picture from all sources: HD Cable, SD Cable, SD DVD, PC and PS2 (PS3 and Internet coming soon).
beautiful picture

just got it up and running today. put in "crank" and knew i would have to take it off standard and put it on movie mode. that was good. tried "the matrix" and it looked a bit too green so i took that down a little, along with picture. took dark up one. then threw in "death race" and damn, there it is: perfect tv! i suppose i will do a THX tweak whenever i get one of those movies but it looks really great after just a few adjustments.

after reading some reviews that had distress about some light in the corners, i went to best buy and stared and stared. i just can't see it! i love this tv. still have a sony DLP in the living room which is decent at 1080i but this blows it away for clarity. movies look wet, like they did when i had a plasma tv (a toshiba that broke) and i may noticed a couple motion moments but i can't be sure until i watch a lot more. which i plan on doing. also plan on running ps3 games but have not gotten around to that yet. i'll ammend if i find problems but so far i am very happy with my purchase.
